Op de knieën / On our knees

Het is goed om af en toe op de knieën te gaan, letterlijk om ook oog te hebben voor het kleine kwetsbare leven op onze aarde. Neem nou deze mestkever: het hele jaar actief, ook in de winter. Ze leggen grote afstanden af met hun bolletjes mest en verspreiden daarmee zaden. Omdat ze 's winters actief zijn, vormen ze ook een belangrijke prooi voor klapeksters die onze winterse heidevelden bevolken. Het mooie van deze foto vindt ik de combinatie van heldere kleuren, de achtergrond en natuurlijk de mestkever zelf. Op de knieën .... ook figuurlijk om onze nederigheid en respect te tonen aan moeder aarde.

Now and then one should get down on his or her knees, literally to see the tiny vulnerable life on earth. For instance this dung beetle: active throughout the year, even in winter. They cover great distances pushing their balls of dung and disperse the seeds that were eaten by the dung-producer. Because they are active in winter, they serve as food for the wintering great grey shrikes. The nice thing about this photo is the combination of clear colors, the background and of course the beetle itself. On our knees .... maybe also figuratively to show our humility and respect to mother earth.

Koud en warm / Cold and warm

Gisteravond zag ik de voortekenen van een bijzondere nacht. Het was helder en de maan verlichtte een deken van mist boven de Rijn. Mist in combinatie met strenge nachtvorst geeft de volgende dag een bijzonder spektakel. Mijn wekker ging om 6:30 en ik kon nog niet zien wat er buiten gebeurt was. Maar onderweg in de auto werd mijn voorgevoel bevestigd. Op een aantal plaatsen, niet overal, waren de bomen berijpt met een centimeters dikke laag van ijskristallen. Aangekomen op de Ederheide stapte ik uit, het was de koudste nacht in 26 jaar, het vroor op dat moment 20 graden. Mijn tenen waren meteen ijskoud en de verleiding om weer in de warme auto te stappen was groot. Maar het bijzondere licht, de glinsterende sneeuw en rijp deden mij de kou verbijten. Yesterday evening I saw the augury for a special night. The sky was clear and the moon was illuminating a blanket of fog over the river Rhine. Fog in combination with severe night-frost will cause a special effect the next morning. The alarm went of at 6:30 and I could not yet see what had happened overnight. But on my way in the car, my prediction was confirmed. At a number of locations the trees were covered in a thick layer of ice crystals. On my arrival at the Ederheide I got out of my car, it was the coldest night in 26 years, temperatures were minus 20 degrees celsius or lower. My toes were frozen instantly and the temptation to get back in the car was strong. But the special light, the snow and the hoar frost made me resist the cold.
